Tundra kaasht usually do not conglomerate in large numbers, but the breed does boast two cities, one that reaches nearly 600 kaasht and the other touching 400. Both cities are open to all breeds, but neither has a very high population of non-Tundra kaasht due simply to their chilly climate. A few hardy souls stick it out for the benefits of a peaceful life, but that isn't common. The larger of the two Tundra kaasht cities, named simply Maa Oosakraa or "the place" with the characteristic lack of interest a Tundra displays, is located on the western end of Mirran, at the western edge of the Skytop Mountains, right where the cold tundra melds into the slightly warmer northern plains. The city is mostly comprised of Tundra kaasht, though some Mountain and Cave kaasht also dwell or visit there and the occasional Plains, Beach, or Plateau wanders through. Maa Oosakraa began as a trade station for ivory and fur, passing the goods only available in colder regions on to merchants who then sold them in southern cities. Tundra kaasht rarely did the distant selling themselves, as they usually had no desire to spend time in the heat of the south or energy to make the trip in the first place, and they often got the raw end of the deal in their trading. Merchants bought from them at a low, quite reasonable price, then sold for a much higher price and made a killing on profits. Tundras never seem to mind, however, and the same practice has continued even though Maa Oosakraa is much larger and livlier than in the long-distant past. Maa Oosakraa is laid out in a rather haphazard fashion, sprawling across a valley between two rolling hills, due to a Tundra's general lack of planning. It is vaguely circular, but only vaguely, and protected by a thick stone wall, surrounded by another wall of tightly packed earth. Together, the two walls stretch for nearly one hundred feet, making them nearly impenetrable from the ground. These walls, sixty feet high to repell the larger, more dangerous kaasht of their environment, were erected after the second time a Plains kaasht clan decimated the city, four hundred years ago. Directly inside those walls are inns, warehouses, and taverns, conveniently located for travellers and merchants. Farther in are the stores, located in small pockets here and there just beyond the inns, and the rest of the city is mainly residences and offices for some of the major merchants. A few artisans live here, as well, and their showcases are located at the very heart of the city along with the singular theatre and the estate of the governer. The police force in Maa Oosakraa is all but non-extistant, as Tundras simply don't care enough to steal or fight and certainly don't care enough to protect other kaasht' belongings. Should a particularly wealthy kaasht stop by, or in times of war, both times when a guard force is needed, very few Tundras do the actual guard work or fighting for the city. Instead, they will hire a mercenary army of Mountain or Plains kaasht, as both are readily accessable. The crime rate is relatively low but the black market runs rampant, with few restrictions to keep it down. Any kaasht who wishes to do shady business will prefer to do it in Maa Oosakraa, if he has access to its remote location. |
